Dear Edward, That's a hell of a question. I think the short answer is that we don't know and we just can't predict whether there will even be a concerted global change over from fossil fuels. With new and huge oil sources coming online all the time, like Pre-salt Brazil http://www.oilandgasiq.com/gas-oil-production-and-operations/articles/the-santos-basin-an-offshore-klondike/, the promise of shale gas and other unconventionals http://www.oilandgasiq.com/oil-drilling-gas-drilling-development/articles/five-shale-plays-that-will-change-the-global-energ/ and factor into that the resurgence of abiotic oil theory http://www.usnews.com/opinion/blogs/energy-intelligence/2011/09/14/abiotic-oil-a-theory-worth-exploring, and there may never be a switch over at all. Time and pressures from the carbon-cutting global lobby alone will tell.
