Siemens Delivers Its 1000th Steam Turbine Produced In Brazil

At the beginning of June, 2013, Siemens delivered the 1000th steam turbine, produced in Jundiaî, a city located in the Brazilian state of Säo Paulo. Jundiaî is home to one of seven Siemens industrial steam turbine production facilities worldwide. The model SST-300 turbine was ordered by Guarani, one of the leading Brazilian companies in the sugar and ethanol industries.

"The delivery of the 1000th turbine marks a historical moment for all of us, proving that we can provide solutions that meet the needs of the market", stated Thiago Pistore, head of steam turbine production at Siemens Brazil.

Over the last five years Jundiaî has tripled its production output through expansion and upgrading of its manufacturing facilities. The site has been producing industrial steam turbines since 2006, as well as providing other services, such as maintenance and repair work. Thanks to one of the most advanced and efficient systems for vibration testing of rotors at the site, it has been possible to balance turbine and compressor rotors on-site starting three years ago, reducing the test periods required for this from 90 to 30 days.

Besides the production of turbines, Siemens also employs innovative technology to serve Brazil's growing markets. The use of ethanol as fuel and power generation using bagasse (residues from sugar production from sugar cane) are but two examples of the growing significance of the sugar and ethanol industries in Brazil. Siemens supplied the fist turbine produced in Jundiaî for this industry in 2006 – an SST-300.

This turbine enhances the overall efficiency of the thermodynamic cycle and increases electricity output with the same amount of fuel. Thanks to its high level of flexibility, the SST-300 is also used by companies in other branches of industry, such as the food and paper industry, mining, metalworking, in chemical processing and in the oil and gas industry.

Siemens is one of the leading suppliers of steam turbines in the paper industry, which forms the second major pillar for steam turbines in Brazil, after the sugar and ethanol industry. In February 2013, Siemens was awarded an order for the supply of two steam turbines for cellulose production by the CMPC company in Guaîba in Rio Grande do Sul. CMPC's new production line will be put into operation in 2015 and will have an annual capacity of 1.3 million tons of bleached eucalyptus pulp. The SST-600 model used at this facility is the largest steam turbine ever produced in Brazil, with a rated output of more than 100 megawatts (MW). The engineering and production of this rating class from Jundiaî is both a testimony and the foundation for the future viability and sustainability of the location.
