Build or Re-build: Does construction matter in FLNGs?

Using tailoring as an analogy, a New-Build FLNG may be likened to a bespoke suit and Converted as an example of upcycled clothing. As with anything bespoke, this allows all the customisation required to finish the project according to the unique requirement. Take location for example, while FLNGs are generally compact, there are energy sources that may be too remote to be accessed by larger vessels. A smaller scale FLNG may be used to access it. This is not a possibility for larger Converted FLNGs.

Despite their differences, it is interesting to note that both New-Build and Converted FLNG designs present FLNG companies with ample opportunities for innovation, especially when it comes to development concepts. Here are a few examples of these innovations:

  • Nearshore FLNG
  • Deepwater Hull Design
  • Unmanned FLNG Design
