Ensuring safety of people and the environment while maintaining profitability are top priorities for producers, operators, and those who provide services in both the upstream and downstream segments in the Oil & Gas industry.

Increasing regulations, media attention, and the public’s view of the industry are only adding to the importance of staying ahead of the curve on how companies approach production and maintenance.

Profitability and corporate reputation are at stake. The industry is, by its very nature, is a risky one. Producers and operators must continually find means of ensuring the safety of employees, the environment, and the public. Best practices can be implemented to meet these requirements and enhance production, control the cost of maintenance, and effectively respond to spill incidents.

This report discusses new technologies that may be employed for production, maintenance, and spill remediation.

It includes novel technology and application methods to increase production and reduce costs while protecting people and the environment.

  • Challenge 1: Paraffin crystallization, asphaltene fouling, and condensate rings all reduce well production and traditional maintenance methodologies require use of acids and solvents (e.g., xylene) or hot-oil. Colloidal chemistry may be a better answer.

  • Challenge 2: Cleaning a crude storage tank represents cost with little or no payback. A cleaning agent that is safe to handle, easy to apply, minimizes waste, reduces cost, and allows recovery of oil from tank sludge may turn these economics around.

  • Challenge 3: Even without major spills, facilities are under scrutiny by the regulators, media, and public. Routine clean up and maintenance that is fast and effective controls cost and maintains positive public perception.

  • Challenge 4: Oil and fuel spills are a part of the industry. Most remediation methods are costly, time consuming, and can in some cases utilize chemistries that are as noxious as the spill itself. Effective response can mitigate these detrimental effects.
