SECURING LNG’S FUTURE IN AN UNCERTAIN SHIPPING MARKET

As the industry looks ahead to the IMO’s NZF discussions later in the year, uncertainty remains - but the market cannot halt, and it continues to collectively define and develop future fuel pathways. The LNG Bunkering Summit North America brings together those at the centre of these decisions, ensuring that the industry voice is represented within global regulatory decisions.

Geopolitical instability, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, has shown the vulnerability of global LNG supply. With this North America is placed in an increasingly important position within the global LNG market – but how does this impact shipping?

The North American LNG sector continues to expand. Strong domestic production, alongside growing interest in renewable natural gas (RNG), presents an opportunity to support both domestic and international maritime fuel demand. For RNG to grow in the shipping market, key challenges around certification, the alignment of international standards, and the application of mechanisms such as mass balance must be solved.

Ultimately, increased production alone does not guarantee availability for the shipping industry. Demand for LNG as a marine fuel is rising, but small-scale bunkering infrastructure is not keeping up, with limited development of new bunker vessels and ongoing delays in Jones Act-compliant projects. Addressing these bottlenecks will be crucial for the future of LNG as a viable pathway.

The future of LNG is no longer just shaped by regulation, but by how effectively the industry can collaborate and demonstrate its needs. The LNG Bunkering Summit North America provides the platform to do this, and ensure LNG remains a viable and scalable pathway.

2025 SPEAKERS INCLUDED:

KEY THEMES FOR 2026
IMPACT OF UNCERTAIN REGULATION, ON THE LNG MARKET IN AMERICA

IMO NZF discussions are ongoing this year, with a decision due to be made towards the end of this year, but what are the opportunities in the market, if some global framework will be adopted, and what are the risks given a framework may not be ready or accepted. How is the uncertainty around this decision impacting the development of LNG pathways, and how can we as an industry come together to help define the outcomes so that investment risk is minimised.

Alongside this, how are the EU approaching decarboonisation, and how can we learn from their framework?

HOW IS SMALL-SCALE LNG INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPING, AND WHERE ARE THERE BOTTLENECKS

Demand for LNG in shipping is only increasing, with the fuel and infrastructure maturing, it is fast becoming the most popular alternative, especially in North America. But with this increased demand, we are not seeing a match in terms of increased infrastructure to facilitate the supply side. In the US how is the Jones Act (and it’s pause) affecting the of bunker barges to be built at speed, to match demand. What can shipowners do to support the development of needed infrastructure?

TECHNICAL LNG CHALLENGES AND GROWTH

With LNG demand increasing, the focus on true emission reduction and tracking become even more important, with the future looking to bring about further scrutiny on methane emissions.

How are shipowners and engineers stengthening their methane slip solutions?

FUEL ALTERNATIVES TO LNG

With LNG groing in demand, there are also eyes on other fuels which could be used further in the pathway. Within the LNG pathway itself, we are seeing a big push in the RNG space. RNG producers are increasingly seeing the potential in the shipping market, and if a global framework is passed, it will be crucial in the longevity of the LNG pathway and LNG investments.

With this, there are also bigger interest areas in Methanol and Ammonia globally, as a future alternatives. This is no longer a battle of the fuels, but a future in the shiping industry will depend on a varied fuel mix.
