The 2026 Middle East crisis answered the question the energy industry had been deferring for forty years. The Strait of Hormuz can be closed. It was closed. When it was, existing bypass infrastructure covered less than a quarter of normal flows — designed for crude only, and systematically targeted by the same actor that imposed the closure. The ceasefire changes nothing structural. The gap is still there. The capital to close it has not been committed.
