The oil price dip of the 1990s brought about the set of mergers that turned the "Seven Sisters" into the supermajors. Unthinkable though it might be, 2015 could be the setting for another seismic shift in the power of these energy giants. After losing billions in the aftermath of the Macondo disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, BP has been in the cross-hairs of its peers.
The huge damages paid out after the disastrous oil spill and trouble with its Russian-based assets have left the company prone to the advances of well-to-do suitors. Royal Dutch Shell was linked to the purchase of BP at the back end of 2014, and 2015 may well see this deal come to fruition.
