As the long, hot summer days set in, your thoughts may turn to extended breaks out of the office, evening bar-b-ques, and more time spent with friends and family. You would be forgiven if work-related learning isn’t top of your priority list for the season ahead.

But for those who want to combine work with the best of the season, we propose that it’s also a good time to reflect on the future of the fossil fuel industry.

To aid you in your quest, Oil and Gas IQ has gathered some of our top interviews from the past few months from business leaders and visionaries on the energy transition what the twenty first century oil and gas company will look like.

Reading them at the beach or poolside is optional.

Summer read #1: The Future of Fossil Fuels

“We can pontificate about the energy transition and carbon reduction all we want,” says Charles McConnell, Executive Director, Carbon Management and Energy Sustainability at the University of Houston. “But if countries are short of energy, watch out!”

McConnell has decades of industry experience and served as Former US Assistant Secretary of Fossil Energy, a politically appointed role to execute policy and operate the Fossil Energy Department.

In this interview, he offers his perspectives on the challenges of the energy transition, what he sees as the way forward and why he believes altruism will come out in the wash in the coming years. Read the interview exclusively on Oil and Gas IQ.

Summer read #2: Leading Through the Energy Transition

“To go from producing carbon-based products to net zero is one of, if not the most drastic transformation of any industry, ever,” says John Dale, Managing Director, ALULA. “We’re seeing many companies struggle to sort through the layers of opinions and organizational chaos.”

It’s easy to get lost in the quest for technical solutions; however, the energy transition is much a technical problem as it is a human and organizational one. Read on to find out what it will take to lead the oil and gas company of the future.

Summer read #3: How Parkland is Driving Towards a Net Zero Future

Parkland Corporation, a provider of oil and petroleum products across North American and the Caribbean, says it is the first company in North America to co-process bio-feedstocks such as canola and tallow (animal fats) alongside crude to make renewable gasoline and diesel.

In this interview, Christy Elliott, Chief Sustainability Officer, Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, Parkland Corporation, discusses sustainability at Parkland, describes how her company is helping customers to reduce their emissions, and explains why she believes that biofuels are essential to the energy transition.
