Singapore’s LNG Liftoff: Leading the Next Wave of Global Maritime Bunkering

LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) is dominating the orderbook for alternative fuel vessels, with the pursuit of net-zero emissions and sustainable operations now a core mandate for global shipping. Within the Asia Pacific, Singapore is leading the charge as the world’s largest bunkering port. It is also a rising LNG powerhouse — especially since natural gas powers around 95% of the nation’s electricity generation. Despite geopolitical challenges impacting global maritime trade, Singapore witnessed upward trajectories as a major hub connecting Asia with the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Middle East. From January to August 2024, Singapore grew in total bunker sales by 7% YoY, reaching more than 36 million tonnes. This growth included continued demand for LNG and biofuel blends. Overall for 2024, the port of Singapore quadrupled its LNG bunkering volume to 463,900 tonnes. In 1Q 2025, LNG bunkering volumes showed no signs of slowing, with Singapore reporting 18% growth over the first five months of 2025 over 2024.

Navigating The Tides: LNG Bunkering Challenges and Growth Strategies in Asia

As LNG continues to establish itself as a cleaner, cost-effective alternative to traditional marine fuels, the spotlight now turns to the operational complexities of bunkering itself. The viability of LNG as a long-term marine fuel hinges not just on supply and demand, but on the availability of reliable, scalable bunkering infrastructure across key ports. LNG bunkering is more than a fuel transfer process—it’s a linchpin in the maritime sector’s broader decarbonisation journey. Here’s a quick snapshot of Asia’s LNG projects outlook.
