The Houston Ship Channel, the conduit for ocean-going vessels between Houston-area terminals and the Gulf of Mexico,was shut on Saturday, March 22 following a collision between a Kirby Inland Marine oil barge and a cargo ship.

Today, March 24, marks the 25^th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in which 260,000–750,000 barrels of crude flowed into the Prince William Sound in Alaska after the super tanker ran aground on a reef.

Until the Deepwater Horizon tragedy of 2010, this was the largest offshore oil spill in US history, and still ranks as one of the world’s greatest every environmental catastrophes.
