It’s increasingly difficult for operators in the oil and gas business to find the right people with the right skills and experience in their local market, but this is a pain which is more acute for oil and gas because the industry is so global and it is dealing with this challenge in so many different local markets.

This means you have to depend on non-native staff in most cases for management and technical skills, but this can be costly to the company not just in terms of pay, but also in relocation and living expenses. Its tough for the expat as well. So we find that these assignments aren’t always successful. You need to depend on the local talent pool for skilled and unskilled labour, but this can mean increased turnover, increased hiring and training costs and sometimes lower rates of compliance with safety and operating policies

Part of the problem is a supply issue, what if you could cultivate more of the talent you need with your existing workforce. What if your expat staff weren’t a constrained resource. And on the other hand what if local operators could communicate more effectively with contractors and management and – for example, understand safety instructions on equipment?

The key to leveraging the value of your existing workforce is building communication skills. Technical skills and knowledge are important, but they are really irrelevant without ability to effectively communicate.
