Oil & Gas Technology: Siemens develops world’s largest turbo compressor for sulphuric acid industry

Abu Dhabi, May 7, 2013

Siemens is expanding its compressor portfolio with a turbo compressor which has been especially developed for the sulphuric acid industry. With a rotor diameter of 2,240 millimetres (mm) and a capacity range of between 8 and 14 megawatts, the new single-stage STC-SOF (22) turbo compressor is the largest and highest capacity machine of its class.

This compressor can replace two machines operated in parallel in plants with a production capacity of up to 6,000 tons of sulphuric acid per day. Operating in combination with optimized control and drive systems, the new unit can reduce overall costs by up to 20 percent compared with a solution with two model STC-SOF compressors with a rotor diameter of 1,400 mm.

The STC-SOF (22) turbo compressor is characterized by low procurement and operating costs. It synthesizes proven technology from the existing Siemens compressor family, custom-combining individual standardized modules for the specific application. Efficiencies of 87 percent are thereby achieved at the compressor coupling – ranking high among comparable compressors in the industry.

"The new STC-SOF (22) is based on a well-established compressor design concept and therefore extremely reliable. It combines robustness and adaptability with the most advanced aerodynamic and mechanical design. This unit will help us successfully strengthen our position as the global technology leader for predesigned turbo compressors," says Lennart Nilsson, Head of the Compression Business Unit at Siemens’ Energy Sector.
