By the end of a field’s life span, the profile of the average producing asset is skewed to outputting as much as 90 per cent water, in an inversely proportional relationship with hydrocarbon output.

As fields across the world mature into late life, produced water becomes as much an aid as a concern - this water being re-injected to stimulate and enhance oil recovery as well as providing a headache in terms of safe disposal and field economics. In 2014 it was estimated that world production of oil averaged 85 million barrels of oil per day. For each barrel of oil produced, approximately three barrels of produced water effluent is outputted. That is 255 million barrels of produced water per day, equating to 93.1 billion barrels per year or 14.8 trillion litres. That amount of water would fill the world’s largest natural harbour, Sydney Harbour, 29 times.
